I have learned that sometimes prayer needs to be long, drawn out and “in a prayer closet”. As a mom, I just can’t seem to manage this scenario most times.
These are my favorite One Word Prayers that get my soul moving:
Being thankful for ANYTHING seems very fashionable these days. God does want us to be deliberate with our thoughts. I don’t now about you, but for me, picking completely random things to be thankful for leads to a kind of ping-ponging in my head. The mere act of trying to focus my thankfulness is more prayerful than a mile long list of complete nonsense. God honors my intentional effort.
When it leads to finding a blessing in something I have overlooked, it’s golden for me.
Growing up in a raucous, evangelical church taught me the power of praise. Now that I am Roman Catholic, I love saying that I have both “the meat and the potatoes” of the Eucharist and the “dessert” given by the Holy Spirit. During our worship of our Lord, He delights in us:
But thou art holy, O thou that inhabits the praises of Israel.” (Psalm 22:3) Acknowledging His mighty hand in all that he created or does for us strengthens our relationship with Him.
Asking God to grant you a favor, to produce something miraculous or to make a situation better puts our soul straight on our hypothetical knees. We are vulnerable. We are humble. We are ripe for His work to be done through us. I don’t hesitate to ask for just about anything, especially when it comes to my children.
Who but our momma will pray for us more intently?
This is my favorite one word prayer. Sometimes I just let it sit out in my mind for a while………then listen. God does know what He is doing. I find that hard to believe in some situations. For instance, when bad things happen to good people, or vice versa. During this confusion, God hears my questioning and again, honors my efforts in seeking. I do get answers, although sometimes not immediately.
With kids, we instinctively know that answering their questions lead to a feeling of security for them. Questions are what lead to intellectual growth. So too, in prayer. They speed spiritual growth.
Which of these words is speaking to us today?
